Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
