Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
