The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
